Futures in Health
Partners Porirua has had a focus on health since 2004. Not only is health important as a career and employment opportunity, but also to improve the lifestyle choices that students make. Programmes developed with Healthcare NZ and Wellcare Education have continued for many years, alongside relationships with Capital and Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) and Whitireia Polytechnic. The partners recognise the need to develop the skill base of load youth and develop career pathways to meet future employment and needs.
A visit to Wellington Hospital's National Patient Simulation Training Suite (NPSTC) is a regular feature for senior students interested in health careers. The NPSTC suite provides essential hands on experience where trainees and visitors can 'have a go'.
During visits students and staff rotate through scenario based workstations involving IV cannulation, dummy run operating procedures, x-ray reading, CPR with mannequins and safe transporting of patients.
Manning the workstations are health professionals with a wide range of expertise from first year nursing trainees, through to experienced senior tutors. They share the various pathways taken to their chosen careers as well as the day to day expectations of their role as health professionals.
Of the students graduating from the programme, several have been accepted into tertiary health based study including Bachelor of Nursing Pacific, Foundation Education (Health Science), Diploma in Enrolled Nursing and Certificate in Mental Health and Paramedics.
Partners Porirua works with Healthcare NZ and Wellcare Education to provide senior students with a programme that includes, NCEA credits, promotion of a range of Health Careers and a work experience programme.
