Transitioning Youth To The Working World

In 2013, because of a change in government policy, Partners Porirua began a new contract with the Ministry of Social development to deliver a new Youth Service.

The focus of the new service is teen parents 16 and 17 years old who who receive financial support from government. The aim is to assist these young people back into education, training or work-based learning. Partners Porirua offers guidance and practical support. It is about stepping in early to help build potential which will help these young people to gain the skills to get a job and have an independent future.

Partners Porirua staff also facilitate parenting and budgeting courses. Working with other community organisations, youth are helped to develop money management skills and teens are supported in their child care.

A number of young mothers have also been assisted with their driving licences and with learning about health careers.

Identifying future workforce needs and linking with education and training providers is an important aspect of Partners Porirua’s work.
