Working Together For Youth

The Porirua Youth 2 Work Movement aims to bring the Porirua community together to nurture and support its young people and to have them all ‘earning or learning’. It is a joint initiative of Porirua City Council, Ngati Toa Rangatira, Partners Porirua, businesses and the community.

Established earlier this year the partnership has swollen in numbers showing a strong commitment from the community to support our young people.

In October Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett signed partnership agreements with Connect Global,  JH Whittaker & Sons Limited, Fusion Interiors Limited (FIL), Bupa Care Services NZ,  Harbourview Rest Home and Hospital, Elite Services and GT Electrical.

These partners have joined a host of others already showing their commitment to youth in Porirua.

The other partners are Porirua City Council, Ngati Toa Rangatira, Partners Porirua, Work and Income, Whitireia New Zealand, Porirua Chamber of Commerce, Compass Health, The Learning Shop, Downer, Leighton HEB, Aotea College, Bishop Viard College, Mana College, Porirua College.

All partners agree to support and champion the movement, to promote opportunities and benefits to Porirua youth and to work together, sharing resources and celebrating achievement.

Porirua College testimonial Oct 2015

“It would be an understatement to say that Tuaa Fruean and Potofou Filo enjoyed their work experience with Downer. They both came back to school absolutely buzzing about their holiday.

Tuaa returned to school and completed his assessments quickly in the hope he can sign out early and start working straight away. Potofou wants to finish the last couple of weeks and he too is really hoping to work for Downer again straight after school. For these two boys it has been life changing.

Their enthusiasm has been contagious at Porirua College as I have had a lot of students tell me they want a future in infrastructure!

So thank you so much for helping our students get involved and we definitely have other students waiting in the wings if there are any more opportunities in the future.”  Georgina Walker, Head of Careers Transition, Porirua College.
