A joint initiative to help keep the community safe at the Porirua City Railway Station is off to a good start. Three community navigators are on hand to help students as they patrol the station during peak times as part of a pilot programme.
Several groups are involved in the project including NZ Police, Partners Porirua and Piri’anga Alofa Pacific and Community Services. The project came about after secondary schools wrote to Porirua City Council about their concerns around safety at the Porirua railway station.
Partners Porirua contract services manager John Lafaele said, “ We’ve been working really closely with the police, city council and other stakeholders to ensure that we have a community response to pushing back on negative activity”.
Senior lead for Piri’anga Alofa Pacific and Community Services, Caroline Mareko, said the navigators had received a positive response from the community, and commuters were happy to see them on the platform.
