Young job seekers get head start with AWF

Twelve young people were prepped and ready for work at AWF as a direct result of Porirua JOBfest 2016.
Roger Calkin, Manager AWF Labour, Wellington, says JOBfest 2016 was the perfect vehicle for really good exposure to a large number of school-leaving candidates.
“We wouldn’t usually get in front of such a large number of young people who are genuinely interested in seeking work – we also got to be alongside a number of our employer clients.”
Roger says AWF is an employment recruitment agency supplying temporary labour to local employers.
“A lot of our staff who get placed with bigger employers as temps get assessed and then picked up into permanent roles that can then lead to other opportunities for advancement.”
The company had 76 registrations of interest at JOBfest 2016 and had follow-up chats with 35-40 young people.
An induction session was held in the week after JOBfest 2016 and 12 young people went onto the books, ready for employment.
AWF had representatives from both the Wellington and Kāpiti branches attend JOBfest 2016.
Roger says they were both impressed by the calibre of the school students and those from Whitireia New Zealand and other training organisations, of whom many already had reasonable levels of training in carpentry and other skills.
In addition to capturing young people now ready for work, Roger says AWF also identified potential candidates, still at school to join them once they’ve completed their studies.
