Youth impress CCDHB

Expressions of interest from 150 eager job seekers made a huge impression on Capital & Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) staff attending Porirua JOBfest 2016.

CCDHB Chief Executive Debbie Chin says she wanted to take part in JOBfest, believing that young people need to be employed or entering study when they leave secondary school.

“Porirua City has a growing young Māori and Pacific population and it is important to us that we take on staff who reflect the community that we are working in.

“We wanted to be able to give young people information about career opportunities in the health sector that will help them to make decisions about areas of study and set career goals.”

CCDHB had seven vacancies on offer at JOBfest 2016, including roles within the security, orderly services and patient administration services.

“Although these positions are mostly entry-level jobs they are the sorts of jobs that can lead on to further careers in health. Some of our former orderlies and patient administrators have moved on to become enrolled and registered nurses, social workers and health workers.”

Debbie says security orderlies and patient administrators were at the stall, ensuring that the right people were answering young people’s enquiries.

“Our staff were consistently busy, talking to young people and encouraging them to set goals for their future.”

Debbie says she was impressed by the calibre of the young people who attended.

“They were all well prepared and professional – their CVs were completed, they were dressed for a job interview, and they were ready and eager to engage in our stall.

“We identified young people who have potential and then worked with Partners Porirua to ensure they received support to apply for the roles.”
